Other States

Third state nationals i.e. citizens from countries other than EFTA/EU-17 or EU-8 require in any event a valid residence and work permit prior to taking up employment in Switzerland. Such permit is only issued under the following conditions: (1) no employees can be recruited for the respective position in Switzerland or in an EU/EFTA member state; (2) the applicable minimum remuneration requirements are met; (3) the cantonal annual quota for employees from foreign countries is not exhausted.

Permits for third state nationals are generally limited to executives, specialists and other qualified employees.

Exceptions to the admittance requirements may be granted where an employment serves educational purposes, or in cases where assignments are based on international cooperation agreements or serve the transfer of executives and specialists within an international business.
