EFTA/EU-17

Under the bilateral treaties between the EU and Switzerland the permit requirements for employees from the former EU-countries plus Malta and Cyprus (EU-17) have widely relaxed. The same rules apply to the EFTA member states.
The EFTA/EU-17 include Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Island, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

Nationals of these countries who work for a Swiss domiciled business up to a maximum of 90 days per calendar year must register with the competent authorities. In case their stay exceeds the 90 days period, the employees must obtain a residence and work permit. Such permit is generally granted if the employee is in a position to present a valid work contract.
